Technical MS Windows XP SP2
Posted by gummi on Friday, March 10, 2006 (00:34:51) (426 reads)

I downloaded service pack 2 from microsoft's technet site when it was released and then debated for a day about installing it. The next day I decided to install it. At first it seemed like xp was loading faster, of course a week later it seems to take longer.

One of the very first things I did upon rebooting was to check and disable services I didn't need, including the windows firewall. One interesting note, disabling the windows firewall service, will render you without access to your network connections. After discovering that, I disabled the firewall from the control panel.

I have been noticing some strange problems with apache and mysql running on localhost. I even updated apache, mysql and php, still weird quirks. I then decided to do some tests under IIS, thats when I noticed I could have only one browser open to localhost any more and I would get a "too many connections error", but only under IIS, not apache. The problem turns out to be the windows firewall! Even though it is disabled, I still had to add an exception for port 80 (bug? Mad ).

Other than that no more problem detected, yet.

Exclamation Update: I tried using windowsupdate.com to check for updates and recieved error [Error number: 0x8DDD0018]

X Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started.

Sad When they say set to automatic they mean set it to Automatic,it will not run update if the service is started and the startup type is set to manual. Very disappointing from administrator standpoint!
